Dividend cover is calculated in relation to profits, which are relatively easily manipulated by accountants. Harder to fudge is the amount of cash flowing into and out of the business. Look in a company's annual report for the cash flow statement – if the net amount coming in is markedly less than the declared profit, it is a sign that the dividend may be less secure than the "cover" figure would suggest.
