In 1954-55 Batten was a research fellow at Cornell University Medical College in New York, where he studied tuberculosis. As part of a research programme investigating the incidence of TB among Navajo Indians, he made several visits to their reservations in Arizona. Back at St George’s, he was appointed consultant physician in 1958.
