Next season, Holmes’ “dead money” is scheduled to be $2.5 million, which means he would count that much against the Jets’ cap if they cut him. So the Jets would save $8.25 million in cap space by cutting Holmes after this season, which is why many observers believe it will be his swan song in New York – and also his chance to prove to the rest of the NFL that he can still play well.
