Scruffiness is common at this time of year because most birds moult their feathers once they’ve finished breeding: some do this twice yearly, but blackbirds just once, in July/August. Birds’ feathers tend to be worn and damaged after breeding; they grow a new set to provide them with effective insulation for the winter. The combination of old feathers falling out and fresh new feathers growing in can look untidy.
