Others say they saw little need for Apple to expand or speed up its buyback program. Much of the company's $147 billion in cash is held overseas, and that cash cannot be accessed without incurring taxes. As an alternative, Apple raised debt to bankroll its buyback program.

How on earth has it come to this? The Labour Party wins three successive elections with the most stupendously effective political formula in its history, then loses the fourth – and goes to pieces, descending into absurdity and irrelevance. Oh, wait a minute – haven’t I heard a story like this somewhere before? What is it with politicians? Are they so fragile that one defeat can cause total collapse and collective nervous breakdown?
