For many, The Midsummer Marriage will be a highlight of the Proms. The opera has not been staged anywhere since Davis conducted it in Chicago to celebrate the Tippett centenary in 2005, yet it encompasses all the vigour and ecstasy of the composer at his best, with optimism that must have seemed otherworldly when it was premiered in the rather grey Britain of 1955.
