Through Frances, Dan met people in the firmament of fashion and design, like Paul Smith and Priscilla Carluccio. It was through Priscilla that I first met Dan, when I wrote about her new garden in Hampshire, 26 years ago. There was a froth of ox-eyed daisies at the gate and a table, covered with a white tablecloth, waiting to be photographed in the orchard.
