Far from being an accurate representation of ability, in some cases a finished piece of coursework might as well have been written by Sir or Miss themselves. Indeed, in really good schools, I would estimate average pupils are getting coursework marks one or two grades higher than they would, if left to their own devices. (Ever wondered why there’s been so much ‘grade inflation’?)
