The terrace in front of the house, patterned in box and brick paths, is planted for the heat of summer in vibrant shades of orange, red and yellow, with the early-flowering oriental poppies cut down and overplanted with dahlias and sunflowers. The Autumn Garden, designed around an old well to the side of the house, is cooler and softer, immersing you in the cobwebby inflorescences of Stipa brachytricha grasses, lavender asters, white Japanese anemones and daisy-like fleabane (Erigeron annuus) which, Patrick says, ‘seeds almost like a weed’. Spires of white cimicifugas (Actaea simplex Atropurpurea Group) float a bubblegum scent through the borders, their ferny purple leaves a perfect foil for the crimson-blotched flowers of Verbascum blattaria albiflorum. And I liked the fat, flat, overscaled box hedge beside the vine-covered terrace, which provides a heavy counterweight to the airy planting.
