A 2010 study published in JAMA found the percentage of 12-to-19-year-olds with any kind of hearing loss increased significantly from 14.9% in 1988-1994 to 19.5% in 2005-2006. That study didn't look at the cause of hearing loss, but many experts point to the rise in use of ear-canal headphones with iPods and other portable devices as a probable culprit, along with noise exposure from loud concerts and clubs.
