We work hard on our sprint technique because you have to be able to go hard at the end of a race without tensing up. The secret is to speed up your legs and use your arms for power, without letting your shoulders and other muscles tense up and slow you down. We also practise drills that are designed to get your legs moving quickly – like heel flicks and ankle flicks. All these things are designed to make your foot's contact time with the floor as short as possible. We sometimes do drills where you imagine you are running on hot coals to get the feet moving quickly. It is important to run with efficiency and intelligence, like keeping your hips high - if your hips start sinking too low it becomes harder to propel your body forwards.
