Steve McCurry’s photograph of the young refugee, taken years before even he learnt the name of his subject, came to sum up the tragedy of Afghanistan and the dignity of its people in the face of war and exile. The image, taken in a Pakistani refugee camp and known simply as the Afghan Girl, eventually became the most recognised photograph in the history of National Geographic magazine, after it appeared on the cover in June 1985.
